Environmental assessment of the irrigation and drainage network of the main canal of Khodaafrin (Case study: East Azarbaijan province and Ardabil, Khodaafrin and Parsabad counties)

Abstract

Development projects with their positive effects always have potential direct and indirect negative effects on the human and natural environment, and if the negative effects are not thought of in advance and are not strengthened in terms of positive effects, they will have adverse results and consequences. The purpose of the current research is to evaluate the environmental effects of the irrigation and drainage network of Khodaafrin dam in East Azarbaijan and Ardabil provinces, within the boundaries of Khodaafrin and Parsabad cities. In order to investigate the environmental parameters, three physical-pollution, ecological-biological and socio-economic and cultural environments were used. Then, using the Icold matrix method, the effect of each of the project's micro-activities on the environmental factors of the study area was measured in the exploitation phase by separating the three mentioned environments. Thus, according to all three environments, the environmental impact assessment questionnaire (EIA) was designed using the instructions of the International Commission on Large Dams, which are in the design, construction or operation stages of the waterways and dams network, and was completed by environmental specialists and experts. The average scores were evaluated. The findings showed that the implementation of the plan is preferable to its non-implementation, in such a way that the total consequences of the implementation of the plan on the surrounding environment are 274 positive points. Physical and pollution with positive 46 points and ecological and biological environment with positive 42 points. According to the findings, the implementation of the irrigation and drainage network plan of the main KhodaAfarin canal is justified by complying with the standards.
